BAYSIDE, QUEENS — Rep. George Santos filed paperwork Tuesday with federal regulators formally declaring a statement of candidacy for the 2024 election cycle.

However, the statement doesn’t guarantee the embattled Republican will seek another term in Congress. Santos was required to clarify to the Federal Election Commission if he was running for a new election cycle in order to keep raising campaign funds.

The move adds fire to the fuel around Santos, who represents parts of Long Island and Bayside, after a bombshell report by The New York Times revealed the freshman lawmaker fabricated details about his background to win his seat in Congress.

“NY-03 voters cannot tolerate this fraudster for another minute let alone two more years!,” said Jane Russell, a member of the constituents group Concerned Citizens of NY-03. “Santos is a disgrace and brings nothing but shame to the House of Representatives.”

Santos is currently under investigation by federal and county prosecutors looking into his campaign finances. Polls also show that nearly eighty percent of the district he represents want to expel him from his seat.

A petition online seeking his ouster has garnered thousands of signatures, while lawmakers in Congress filed a resolution to boot him from his seat.

Earlier this month, the House Ethics Committee launched an investigation looking into possible illegalities during Santos’ congressional campaign last year and other misconduct.
