BAYSIDE, QUEENS — The embattled Republican George Santos said he will continue to serve the district despite temporarily recusing from House committees on Tuesday.

Santos withdrew his participation from the House Committee on Small Business and the House Committee on Science, Space & Technology, and highlighted his commitment “to serving the district,” according to a statement.

“With the ongoing attention surrounding both my personal and campaign financial investigations, I have submitted a request to Speaker McCarthy that I be temporarily recused from my committee assignments until I am cleared,” said Congressman Santos.

Still, residents in his own district are calling for Santos to resign amid the mounting reports of fabricating his professional experience and lying about where he attended college. Federal prosecutors in New York have also launched investigations looking at his finances.

Santos said earlier this month that he wouldn’t resign until the 142,000 people that voted for him, ask him to resign.

A Siena College poll revealed on Tuesday that the majority of voters in his district want him to resign. Only 13 percent of New York's 3rd congressional district wanted George Santos to stay in office, according to the poll.
