LITTLE NECK, QUEENS — A new health laboratory in Little Neck has been named one of this year's top construction projects in Queens.

The Queens Chamber of Commerce will award Northwell Health Laboratories its new construction award for health care facilities during its annual building awards gala in October, the business association announced.

The $47.7 million lab, which opened in February, is a collaboration between Northwell Health and NYC Health + Hospitals, the city's public hospital network.

It is the "the largest automated lab of its kind in North America," Betty Sarmiento, director of architectural design at Northwell Health, told Patch.

"This state-of-the-art facility shows what's possible when two mission-driven organizations collaborate," Michael J. Dowling, president and CEO at Northwell Health, said when the lab opened.

The LEED Silver-certified laboratory at 59-25 Little Neck Parkway performs microbiology tests for local hospitals, clinics and physicians' offices.

Architects Grace Han and Jeff Raasch of Flad Architects are behind the design and Hunter Roberts Construction Group built the lab.

"By recognizing and encouraging excellence in the design and construction of our built environment, the Queens Chamber of Commerce is helping to ensure a healthy, sustainable and attractive urban landscape that will make Queens an even better place to live, do business and raise a family," Thomas J. Grech, president and CEO of the Queens Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement.
