LITTLE NECK, QUEENS — Two Queens sports icons will join a social services organization at the launch of its new Little Neck batting cages this weekend.

Mr. and Mrs. Met, the official mascots of the New York Mets, will head from Citi Field to Little Neck for the opening of Commonpoint Queens' new indoor fitness space and batting cages from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7; the new fitness space is located at the Tanenbaum Family Pool at 58-25 Little Neck Parkway, where Commonpoint Queens already hosts programming.

Danielle Ellman, CEO of Commonpoint Queens, said in a statement that the group's decision to build the new sports center was inspired in-part by the pandemic.

"Our community has shown increasingly more interest in our specialty sports programs and clinics - especially during the pandemic - because they allow our children to play sports and learn skills in a safe environment," she said, adding that the center also offers an indoor place to play baseball during the cold winter months.

Opening day will include a tour of the space, and a chance to try out the batting cages, sample the organization's baseball training program, and meet Mr. and Mrs. Met, who will attend the event as part of the Amazin' Mets Foundation.
