City Council District 23 Election Results: Barry Grodenchik Wins

POLLS CLOSED: City Councilman Barry Grodenchik will keep his seat in the city council's 23rd district, the New York Times reported.

BAYSIDE-DOUGLASTON, NY -- City Councilman Barry Grodenchik defended his seat in the city council's 23rd district, the New York Times reported.

Grodenchik, on the ballot representing Democratic and Working Families parties, captured about 64 percent of the vote with roughly 95 percent of the vote counted, according to unofficial results from the New York City Board of Elections. His challengers, Joseph Concannon and John Y. Lim, won around 33 percent and 2 percent of the vote respectively, according to the BOE.

Grodenchik will continue to represent District 23, which includes Bayside, Bellerose, Douglaston, Floral Park, Fresh Meadows, Glen Oaks, Hollis, Hollis Hills, Holliswood, Little Neck and Queens Village. He's represented the district since 2015, when he first beat out Concannon for the seat. The two ran against each other after Mark Weprin resigned from the position to be a legislative liaison for Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

In the mayoral race, incumbent Democrat Bill de Blasio defended his seat, the New York Times reported. De Blasio won roughly 66 percent of the vote with around 98 percent of the vote counted, according to the BOE. His lead competitor, Republican Nicole Malliotakis, won nearly 28 percent of the vote, according to the BOE.

Also on the citywide ticket Tuesday, Comptroller Scott Stringer and Public Advocate Letitia James, both Democrats, won second terms over Republicans Michel Faulkner and J.C. Polanco, respectively.
