SEE IT: Northeast Queens Hospital Workers Kneel For George Floyd

Hundreds of workers at Long Island Jewish Medical Center took a knee Friday in remembrance of George Floyd.

GLEN OAKS, QUEENS — Hundreds of workers at Long Island Jewish Medical Center took a knee Friday in remembrance of George Floyd, who died after a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

Hospital workers held signs with messages like "White Coats for Black Lives" and "You Clapped For Us, We Kneel For You" as they kneeled for eight minutes and 46 seconds and chanted "I can't breathe."

“When George Floyd was murdered, you saw the outrage,” said Dr. Jennifer Mieres, Northwell Health senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer. “The entire Northwell community started reaching out, saying, ‘We’ve just survived COVID-19, what are we going to do about this?’"

Similar demonstrations took place at Northwell Health facilities across New York City and Long Island, though the gathering on the lawn in front of Long Island Jewish was the system's largest, according to a news release.

"This is near and dear to our hearts," Mieres said. "This is part of our journey to equity. What you saw today was our continued commitment to eliminate racism.”

Among the participants in LIJ's demonstration were workers who are still on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic, which has disproportionately affected Black and Latino New Yorkers.

LIJ hospital workers have treated nearly 2,500 coronavirus patients.
