Single and Jewish? This Group's For You

If you're single and Jewish in Little Neck, there's a new group coming this fall aimed squarely at you. 

Simcha Singles, named for the Hebrew word for "happy," will host its first gathering at the in September, said Warren Shapiro, the group's co-founder. 

Meetings will be held one Friday per month at 8 p.m., and will consist of a short service followed by a discussion session. The evening will cap off with coffee, cake and the opportunity to talk and schmooze with fellow attendees.

As things get going, Shapiro said he plans to add other activities to the agenda, like karaoke nights and day-trips to museums like the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia.  

Shapiro, along with the center's own Rabbi Gordon Yaffe, decided to start the group as a means of connecting the area's many local singles.

Shapiro, who is 52, said he made his foray into singles-organizing back in his 20s, when he started a similar group in Great Neck.

Thirty years later and single himself, Shapiro said he thought it would be a good idea to start the program back up again, this time across the border in Little Neck.
