BAYSIDE, QUEENS — A 14-year-old girl was arrested Friday on charges that she punched and slapped a fellow teen at Marie Curie Middle School in Bayside, according to police.

The fight unfolded Thursday afternoon in the middle school's cafeteria, where the teen started attacking a 13-year-old girl as three teachers tried but failed to break up the fight, according to video obtained by the New York Post this week.

The next day, the NYPD filed a juvenile assault charge against the attacker, a police spokesperson told Patch. The girl's name was not released because she is underage.

Her 13-year-old victim, whose name was also not released, suffered neck pain and a cut to her forehead but refused medical attention, according to police.

"Safety always comes first, and disciplinary action was taken to address this incident," DOE spokesperson Miranda Barbot said in a statement to the Post. "It has also been referred for further investigation to ensure the school followed proper protocol."

One teacher at the middle school, which is also known as M.S. 158, told the Post that he and his coworkers are reluctant to intervene in fights like the one Thursday for fear of backlash from the administration.

"The students run the building," the anonymous teacher told the Post. "The environment gets more chaotic by the day."

Marie Curie Middle School made headlines just last month after parents told the New York Post their daughter, an eighth-grade student there, was sexually harassed by a classmate for months but officials did little to stop it.
