A 16-year-old boy was shot in the leg outside Martin Van Buren High School Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

QUEENS VILLAGE, QUEENS — A 16-year-old boy was shot in the leg outside Martin Van Buren High School Tuesday afternoon, according to police and news reports.

The shooting happened about 2:45 p.m. near the Hillside Avenue school, police said.

A 911 caller reported a group of students fighting before the shot rang out, the New York Daily News reported.

The teen, a Martin Van Buren student, returned to school to get help, according to the Daily News.

EMS rushed him to Long Island Jewish Medical Center, a Fire Department spokesperson said. He is expected to survive.

A teacher told the Daily News that the school was on lockdown after reports of the shooting; a Department of Education spokesperson did not respond to Patch's request for comment.

An NYPD spokesperson told Patch he could not confirm news reports that the teen accidentally shot himself.
