49-Unit Bed-Stuy Condo Slated For Sustainable Upgrades

A Brooklyn condo is one of two NYC developments slated for state-sponsored sustainable upgrades.

BED-STUY, NY — A Bed Stuy condo is slated for sustainable upgrades — like better insulation and electric heat systems — as part of a statewide project to reduce carbon emissions.

The 49-unit condo, located at 1240 Bedford Avenue, was one of only two New York City developments awarded state money. A 173-unit high-rise in Manhattan will also see an environmentally-friendly facelift.

The $1.9 million statewide program will upgrade six multifamily buildings to be more energy efficient, according to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.

Upgrades could include better insulation, ventilation to improve indoor air quality and electrification of heat and water systems to reduce fossil fuel reliance.

The Bed Stuy project is a low rise post-1980 condo. Other projects include apartments and co-ops in the Finger Lakes and Western New York.

"Buildings are one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions in New York State. Integrating energy efficiency and electrification upgrades as part of routine investments will reduce carbon pollution and help achieve more sustainable, healthy, and comfortable buildings at lower costs," the state energy authority said in a news release.

The Brooklyn condo was included in the first round of incentives for low carbon renovations, but more multifamily buildings will continue to receive funding.
