Announcement: Smif N Wessun Drops Something Monumental
Bed-Stuy and Brownsville rappers collaborate with iconic producer Pete Rock for fifth studio album
Bed-Stuy native Tek (Tekomin Williams) and Steele (Darrell Yates) of neighboring Brownsville, along with iconic hip hop producer Pete Rock have produced something truly Monumental: Together Tek and Steele, who comprise the supergroup Smif N Wessun, today dropped their fifth studio album, entitled Monumental.
Hip hop duo Smif N Wessun (aka Cocoa Brovaz) comprise one-fourth of the Boot Camp Clik, with Buckshot, Heltah Skeltah and O.G.C. Most known for their Jamaican Patois during their raps (which was more evident during the earlier stages of their career), the duo first garnered national attention after they debuted on Black Moon's 1993 album Enta da Stage, appearing on the tracks "Black Smif NWessun" and "U Da Man"
After they released their first single "Bucktown"in 1994, Smif N Wessun became an underground smash. "Bucktown" gave the group considerable hype for their debut album, Dah Shinin', released in January 1995. The album debuted in the top-5 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and went on to sell over 300,000 copies in the United States. Dah Shinin became an influential album in the hardcore New York hip hop scene of the mid-1990s, and is considered a rap classic.
