Bed-Stuy Second Graders March in Three Kings Day Parade

Second graders from Brighter Choice Community School get an interactive lesson in Spanish language and culture

Second graders from Brighter Choice Community School in Bed-Stuy received an interactive lesson in Spanish language and Latin American culture today, when they marched in the Three Kings Day Parade-- an annual celebration in East Harlem that marks the end of the Christmas season in Latin America.

The 20 students from Deborah Kingiron's Spanish class participated in the parade -- now in its 34th year -- by marching  alongside of floats, camels, dancers and beatifully costumed biblical characters, including the Three Kings who represent the Feast of the Epiphany.

The second graders designed their own crowns and maracas made from plastic cups, rice, soybeans and sugar.

"I think that the parade was fun because we got to see the Three Kings and we got to get gifts and we represented our school," said Tata W.  "I liked holding the banner up."

"In the parade first I was excited and I saw a lot of people and a lot of different schools and then I saw tall people dressed up as the Three Kings and a lot of people taking pictures and newspeople filming the parade," said Ajanie H. "People said hello."
