Bed-Stuy Storefronts: A Little Nip/Tuck Never Hurt Nobody!
When it comes to NYC storefronts, what's on the outside can be equally as important as what's on the inside

The Bed-Stuy Gateway Website has put Bed-Stuy Patch on to a new publication recently released by the New York City Department of Business Solutions entitled, Facade: Guide to Storefront Design.
Well, it’s about time! If there’s one thing some of Bed-Stuy's storefront businesses need a little boost with, it is their street-facing façades.
Yes, we’re all raised to believe that it’s not what’s on the outside, but what’s on the inside that matters. And that’s especially true in New York City, the “concrete jungle,” where the most unimpressive-looking buildings might house the most remarkable interiors.

But when it comes to commercial property, where success depends on foot traffic and options are plentiful, it can become a beauty contest of the most superficial kind... at least until you get a chance to sample what’s inside.
So to some of the storefront businesses in Bed-Stuy: It may be time to treat yourself to a little Nip/Tuck. You're aging. You've raised many generation of children and even seen them through college. So why not treat yourself? You deserve it!

Here are Ten Tips on how to Design a Storefront from Façade: Guide to Storefront Design:
1. Less is more
2. Choose good materials.
3. If you are going to use a roll-down security solution, always choose an open-grid security grill.
4. Know who you’re hiring.
5. Proper maintenance goes a long way and in the end will help your bottom line.
6. Keep in mind the fabric of your building and your neighborhood.
7. Think about what it is that makes your area unique.
8. Make it easy to see into your store.
9. Include inviting lighting.
10. Remember: Keep it simple!
Other checklist advise:
- Look at what you have—older buildings often have interesting architectural details that may have been covered up over the years. An interesting and attractive façade can be an asset.
- Check to see if you are in a landmarked building or historic district. If you are, there are additional rules that pertain to making changes in that building (see page 18).
- Signs are one of the most cost-effective and eye-catching ways to draw more attention to your business. Effective signs are attentive to the scale of the building and the point of view of the pedestrian. Though it may surprise you, the simpler the sign, the more attention it will likely get. Studies have shown that people quickly reach a visual saturation point – if there is too much visual clutter, people shut down and ignore all of the signs around them.
