Construction Begins On New Affordable Bed-Stuy Residence
Affordability requirements could put the monthly cost of a studio under $800, according to the city.

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — Another vacant lot in Bed-Stuy is sprouting affordable housing.
City officials announced last week that construction has begun at 1510 Broadway, a 108 unit building with over 9,000 square feet of retail and lots of open space, too.
“Our administration is deeply committed to diversifying the pool of developers helping us create and preserve affordable housing,” said NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development Commissioner Adolfo Carrión Jr.

The building is being funded by HPD’s Extremely Low and Low-Income Affordability Program, which also helped fund 1911 Atlantic Ave., an even larger and more affordable building that opened its lottery, with units as cheap as $375.
The city hasn't yet listed 1510 Broadway rents but said in a release that affordability requirements would begin at 40 percent of the area median income, which could put the monthly cost of a studio under $800.

The building will have a mix of apartments, from studios to three bedroom units. HPD pledged that 16 units will be reserved for the formerly homeless.
MacQuesten Development, together with HPD, has teamed up with the Local Development Corporation of East New York to develop the empty lot.
