Smiley and West will discuss their new book, The Rich and the Rest of Us: A Poverty Manifesto where they challenge us to re-examine our assumptions about poverty in America, what it really is and how to eliminate it now.

WHAT: Amplify Action: Sustainability Through the Arts, The Opening Reception

WHY GO: “Amplify Action: Sustainability through the Arts”, is an exhibition that will demonstrate how arts, culture, and media can be powerful catalysts for social change through themes of sustainable living, healthy consumer choices, and environmental action. Featured works examine diverse topics including ecology, economy, environmental consciousness, resource conservation, agriculture, environmental health, and justice.

WHAT: The Grand Opening of the 462 Halsey Community Garden

WHY GO: Just six months ago, Kristen Bonardi Rapp and Shatia Jackson opened the rusty gates of a long-abandoned vacant lot at 462 Halsey Street in the heart of Bed-Stuy. Working together with almost 50 members of the local community, they've built a new and vibrant garden, with more than two dozen vegetable plots for our members as well as communal beds open to all.
