Police Blotter: Four Shootings, a Heroin Bust

A weekly roundup of crime in the 81st Precinct

The 81st Police Precinct is reporting a 25 percent increase in crime (35 incidents versus 28) for the week of July 4 through July 10, 2011. However, for the month there has been a 3.5 decrease in crime (110 incidents versus 114), compared to this same 28-day period last year. And so far, year-to-date, there has been a 10.7 percent increase in crime overall (695 incidents versus 628), compared to 2010.

Four Shootings:

On Monday, July 18, a 20-year-old man was shot in the hand and checked himself into Kings County Hospital. According to the man, someone shot him in a nearby park at around 1:30pm. However, upon police investigation, it was discovered that he had shot himself inside of his apartment on Fulton street.

On Wednesday, July 20, at approximately 3:30am, two males, cousins were sitting on their front stoop outside of a club on the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Prescott Place when shooting erupted. One victim, 22 years old, identified as Kyle Decoteau, 22, was shot in the stomach. The other victim, Tony Green, 24, was shot in the lower back. The 24-year-old Green was transported to Interfaith Hospital where he was treated and is in stable condition. Police found Decoteau dead on the sidewalk outside when they arrived at the scene. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

Today, Thursday, July 21, at approximately 3:00am, a 16-year-old male was walking up Lewis Avenue when shooting erupted at the corner of Lewis Avenue. According to the teen, they started running when they heard the gunshots, but the teen was hit in the right leg. His friends escorted the victim to Woodhull Hospital where he was treated and released in good condition. Police report that the teen was known to police and had a prior record. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

Today, Thursday, July 21, at approximately 2:30pm, a male in his 30's was left injured when a shooting erupted on Marcus Garvey and Gates Avenue. The bullet grazed the man's neck. He was transported by ambulance to Kings County Hospital where he is in stable condition. The incident is under police investigation.

Drug Bust:

Today, Thursday, July 21, police conducted a search warrant of a drug operation at Madison Street and Patchen Avenue. Three arrests were made-- two males and one female. Police were able to recover an undisclosed but "significant amount" of heroine, crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia.
