Police Blotter: Man Choked and Slashed for his Cell Phone
A weekly roundup of crime in the 79th Precinct

Crime is down 43 percent in the 79th precinct (20 incidents, versus 35 incidents) for the week of March 26 through April 1, compared to this same week in 2011. Crime is down 5 percent (118 incidents, versus 124 incidents), compared to this same 28-day period last year. Year to date, crime is up 19 percent (412 incidents, versus 346 incidents), compared to this same time period in 2011.
Three Burlgaries:
On Friday, April 6, at approximately 11:25pm, a 27-year-old woman was robbed inside of her public housing residence on Marcus Garvey Boulevard (between Myrtle and Park Avenues). According to police reports, the woman was inside of her residence when a man, later identified as Dumel Alcindor, climbed into her window. The woman did not resist, as she stated she was in shock and in fear of her life. The perpetrator took her cell phone and then fled. Police did a canvas of the area, found and arrested the man and returned the woman’s property. There were no injuries.

A couple’s home was burglarized on Tompkins Avenue (between Hancock and Halsey Streets) sometime between Saturday, March 31 at 11:00am and Friday, April 6, 10:30 am, while were the couple was away. According to police reports the perpetrator entered the front-door of the apartment, which the victim said he is sure he locked, and took a Dell computer, a Vizio TV, a Samsung TV and a Bulova diamond-faced watch, all valued at $6,300. The victim stated only he and his wife had keys to the apartment. The investigation is ongoing.
On Saturday, April 7, sometime between the hours of 2:00pm and 5:00pm, a residence on Bedford Avenue (between Clifton Place and Lafayette) was burglarized. According to the victim, he and his roommate left the residence to run errands. Upon their return, they found several items stolen from off of their kitchen table, including an iPod Nano, an iPod, a Dell Laptop, a Bose stereo and Sony headphones, all valued at $2,040. The victim, 24, stated he’s certain he locked the door, but not sure whether or not he locked the window, which was found unlocked when he returned. Also moments after returning to his apartment, the victim stated a neighbor knocked on his door to inform him that he heard someone inside of his house. The investigation is ongoing.

Two Robberies:
On Monday, April 2, at approximately 3:00am, a 23-year-old man was robbed of his cell phone on Hart Street (between Marcy and Tompkins Avenues), on his way home from the train station. According to police reports, the man was walking home when an unknown person approached him from behind and grabbed him. The victim struggled, at which point the perpetrator stated, “Don’t run,” and then slashed him on his neck with a knife. Reportedly, the perpetrator then knocked the victim down to the sidewalk and began choking him while holding the knife to his neck. He then snatched the victim’s glasses and threw them into the street and said, “Don’t look at me,” at which point, the victim handed over his phone. According to the victim, the perpetrator then fled northbound on Marcy Avenue. The victim was admitted to Woodhull Hospital. Police conducted a canvas of the area, but so far have made no arrests. The investigation is ongoing.
On Thursday, April 5, at approximately 10:50pm, a man was robbed of his wallet on Hancock Street (at Tompkins Avenue) by three unknown men while walking home. According to police reports, the man was walking home when he was approached by four unknown men who displayed a black handgun and demanded his wallet. The victim handed over his wallet, at which point the men fled westbound down Hancock Street. No injuries were sustained. There were no witnesses and no surveillance cameras in the area. Police conducted a canvas of the area, but so far have mad no arrests. The investigation is ongoing.
