The Big Bed-Stuy Exodus

Renters priced out of Bed-Stuy are leaving by the droves

You gain some. You lose some.

A sudden surge in the number of black residents moving out of Bed-Stuy, Clinton Hill and Crown Heights and moving into East New York is making it one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in Brooklyn, reported the Daily News.

Census data is showing that the black population increased by 13 percent in East New York from 2000 to 2010, due to a flood of new residents who were priced out of their neighborhoods.

Brooklyn’s overall black population fell by 6 percent from residents who can no longer afford the rising rents. These residents are heading further into Brooklyn, into the suburbs or leaving the city altogether, the report said.
