VIDEO: A Community Circle That Cares
The young scholars at La Cima Elementary culminate a week of service
, located at 800 Gates Avenue, held its weekly Community Circle today (as it does every Friday)!
The Community Circle is a special time for La Cima’s kindergarteners through fourth-graders to share with their schoolmates what they have learned throughout the week. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to develop each child’s public speaking skills, listening skills and self-confidence.
This Friday’s Community Circle was pretty special, as it was a culmination of their “Week of Service,” in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday this past Monday, and they invited Bed-Stuy Patch to take part.

The scholars – as they are called by the staff and their peers alike -- together with the aid of their teachers came up with a special way they could each give back and improve their communities. Some of these ways included visiting senior centers to ask the seniors about their lives while growing up during the Civil Rights era, holding canned food drives, writing a letter to the DOE to request its assistance helping to bring a new playground to the school, and more!
La Cima Elementary is certainly well on its way to developing a new generation of smart, thoughtful and caring citizens for Bed-Stuy.
