Updated: Blaze Leaves Katonah House 'Uninhabitable'

A house fire at 23 South Road in Katonah was brought under control around 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, with firefighters checking the structure for hot spots, officials said.

"It only took about 15-20 minutes to knock down," said Katonah Fire Chief, Jim McHugh. He said the Bedford Hills Fire Department was first to arrive at the scene.

The owners were not home at the time, but they arrived as firefighters were completing their work. There were no reported injuries at the scene.

Mt. Kisco Fire Department, Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Westchester Emergency Medical Services also responded. Bedford police detectives inspected the home and interviewed the homeowners.

The home has been deemed "uninhabitable," according Steven Fraietta, Bedford's building inspector. The second floor windows are knocked out—most of the damage, if not all, was contained to the second floor, said McHugh.

The blaze was called in by a neighbor on Glen Ridge Road; when the Katonah and Bedford Hills fire departments arrived, small amounts of smoke were issuing from the second floor of the red Cape.

The home's windows were knocked out by authorities combating the blaze.

The Westchester County Cause and Origin team is investigating the cause of the fire.
