Letter to the Editor: Hayworth Wrong on Pipeline Project

A letter submitted by Len Martello of Bedford Hills.

The U.S. Senate recently voted to reject the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline project. At her recent Town Hall meeting in Somers, Congresswoman Nan Hayworth (R-Mt. Kisco) indicated strong support for this dangerous project. Experts have said the pipeline would only create about 50 permanent jobs, endanger our clean water and do nothing to make our country energy independent because tar sands oil produces a type of crude that the U.S. does not use.

Let's remember, the President was willing to thoroughly investigate the soundness of this project, but it was the GOP/Tea Party in Congress that insisted on a "their way or the highway" timeline. The President, rightly, stood firm. I am proud of Senators Gillibrand and Schumer for representing their constituents instead of Big Oil, who Hayworth has sided with throughout her term in office.

Redistricting aside, it is Hayworth’s of out-of-touch positions that leads citizens to seek representatives who stand for Main Street values in the new Congressional districts (16, 17 and 18). Her votes in Congress have aligned with the GOP/Tea Party over 90% of the time. For someone who talks of bi-partisan and common-sense solutions, Nan Hayworth’s actions clearly indicate otherwise.
