Man Extradited to Face Sex Abuse Charges Involving Bedford Hills Teen

Jose Toapante, 38, arrived in New York on Tuesday after being extradited from North Carolina to face sexual assault charges in connection with the abuse of a 15-year-old girl from Bedford Hills.
Toaponte is accused of sexually abusing the girl in February 2011. Police said the girl and her parents together reported the incident, and said she knew her alleged attacker.
After the incident was reported, police learned the suspect had left the area and issued a warrant for his arrest. Detective Haynes led seven-month investigation that led to Toaponte's extradition.

The suspect was brought back from North Carolina with the assistance of the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office, the Westchester County Department of Public Safety, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, NC and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Toapante was charged with a third-degree criminal sexual act, a felony. He was taken into custody on by the Westchester County Dept. of Public Safety warrant squad and turned over to the Bedford Police.

Following his arraignment, Toapanted was remanded to the Westchester County Jail pending a court appearance on Thursday.
