Storm Causes Outages, Road Blocks, School Delays

Fox Lane Middle and High School are closed and Bedford elementary schools are operating on a two-hour delay due to power outages, Superintendent Jere Hochman said in an email to Patch.

First story:

Overnight wind gusts and heavy rains plagued Bedford and surrounding towns and continue to pose problems for this morning's commute.

Bedford Central Schools announced they will open on a two-hour delay due to a loss of electrical power and a number of fallen trees across roads. All private school transportation will also be delayed two hours.

NYSEG reports 1,399 customers without power in Bedford; 156 in Lewisboro and 628 out in Pound Ridge, as of 7 a.m.

Bedford police warned drivers this monring to avoid Pound Ridge Road in the area of Middle Patent Road due to a tree blocking the road. Route 35 was blocked at Holly Branch Road at 7 a.m. due to a downed tree and the Saw Mill River Parkway was flooded between exit 27 and exit 30, causing closures in both directions.

There are several trees and wires down throughout the area, police said in a Nixle alert.

The Harlem Line Metro North Service is currently experiencing delays of up to 45 minutes due to weather-related conditions. 

The National Weather Service high wind watch expired early this morning but an advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. tonight. The advisory means gusts between 46 to 57 mph can occurr—and it means that strong winds and rain could bring down more trees, large limbs or power lines that can pose hazards to drivers or pedestrians or homes near large trees, the NWS advisory states.

Here's the NWS forecast for today:

• Showers will continue through 9 a.m., with partial sun and temperatures dropping to 36 by 5 p.m. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
• Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 25. West wind 15 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph.
• Friday brings a slight chance of snow showers (20 percent) after noon. It will be partly sunny, with a high near 31.
