4. Today is Poinsetta Day

Did you know why poinsettas are associated with Christmas? Mexican folklore has the story of a girl too poor to buy flowers for Jesus on Christmas Eve. She offered weeds as a gift. When she brought the weeds into a church, they blossomed into the beautiful red plants we know as poinsettias, or Flores de Noche Buena in Mexico (Spanish for "flowers of the holy night"), according to The Learning Channel. Today is Poinsetta Daya great day to stop into one of our local nurseries to buy one. Check Patch's Places page for Nurseries & Gardens—you'll find the familiar shops and perhaps one or two you didn't know about. Check them out!

5. Looking ahead: meetings this week

The municipal and school calendars this week include several meetings: Both the Katonah Lewisboro and Bedford Central school boards meet for the last time this year, the former on Thursday night at 7:30 in the John Jay High School library and latter Wed night at 8 p.m. in the Fox Lane MS Theater. The town of Bedford planning board meets Tuesday night—check back for a preview of some of the developments going on there.
