The Rookie Rugby Program began in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District on Thursday.

Pat Laczkowski from Rugby NY will be teaching students at Mepham High School on Thursday about the sport, running drills and reviewing how to pass and score during physical education classes throughout the school day.

Clinics were also run at Calhoun High School and Kennedy High School this week and one will take place at Grand Avenue Middle School on Friday.

On Thursday evening, students from all three high schools will compete in the first annual Bellmore-Merrick Fall Rugby Classic.

Players will first practice “skills and drills,” later breaking up into teams to compete in round robin rugby matches. USA Rugby partner AIG will provide the winning team with a “Rugby Cup” trophy.
