Chicken Soup for the Soul Book Benefiting Toys for Tots

As a 12-year-old paperboy, Morrill Worcester of Maine won a trip to Washington D.C. that included a visit to Arlington National Cemetery. Seeing hundreds of thousands of graves and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier left an indelible impression on the adolescent &ndash; one that would later inspire him as an adult. In 1992, as the owner of a wreath company, Worcester pondered what to do with a large surplus of wreaths. He then remembered the rows and rows of white marble headstones marking the final resting place of veterans and leaders. With the help of volunteers and donors, Worcester was able to transport the wreaths to America&rsquo;s most hallowed ground. The December routine continued for over a decade. In 2005, a photo of the wreaths honoring our country&rsquo;s heroes circulated across the nation, eventually leading to allowing all Americans to participate in this annual tradition.

I&rsquo;m sending this invitation to the residents of Broome County to write a review of my picture book titled Tiger and My Eye Patch that&rsquo;s set in Johnson City.
Wearing an eye patch and glasses as a child to correct my lazy eye resulted in taunting from classmates at school. To avoid being called &ldquo;Pee Wee the Pirate&rdquo; and &ldquo;Crossed-eyed Colleen,&rdquo; I began hiding my eye patch and glasses in my bookbag or lunchbox before entering the classroom, making seeing and completing schoolwork difficult.
Spending vacations in Johnson City with my grandparents and their Great Dane Tiger, however, helped me realize that being different wasn&rsquo;t such a bad thing. One summer, my distinct appearance coaxed Tiger back to safety when he found himself in a dangerous situation on Grand Avenue.
I used this positive true-life experience to write my first children&rsquo;s book. Tiger and My Eye Patch serves as a tribute to my late grandparents, Tiger, and Johnson City residents. In addition, this picture book is designed to empower children who may believe their own differences separate them from their peers.
As an educator and writer, I&rsquo;ve enjoyed teaching elementary school and college while writing positive newspaper and magazine stories about children and adults overcoming challenges. In addition, I&rsquo;m a longtime nonprofit volunteer and contributing author to Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Spirit of Christmas, a book benefiting Toys for Tots.
Admittedly, writing a children&rsquo;s book is a new experience for me. Reviews from readers like you are greatly appreciated to help Tiger and My Eye Patch gain visibility amongst the incredible competition and give me constructive feedback.
