Police Warn Suffolk Residents About New Phone Scam
Suffolk police are warning residents about a phone scam where callers use spoofing apps to impersonate law enforcement and threaten victims.
BRENTWOOD, NY — Suffolk County police are warning residents about an uptick in scams involving callers threatening victims for cash.
According to the police department, Suffolk residents should be aware of a phone scam where callers impersonate law enforcement and threaten to arrest the victim if they don't give them money.
Police sent out a warning to residents: "Detectives have been made aware of at least three incidents during which a resident was contacted by phone by a caller identifying themselves as a member of the Suffolk County Police Department who says the resident has a warrant for their arrest and for them to send money."

Police said they are not aware of any victims who gave money to the callers and explained how the scam works: "The victims report the scammers called from what appeared to be legitimate police department phone numbers. Scammers often use spoofing apps and other technology to falsely represent the number they are calling from."
Police reminded the public that they never demand money instead of arrest or consequence. Anyone who believes they have been the victim of this or any other scam should contact the police.
