Police ID Man Killed In Crash On LIE

A car struck several trees Tuesday evening, police say.

UPDATE 8 p.m.: The man killed in the crash has been identified as Javier Perez, 56, of Coram.

HAUPPAUGE, NY – A 56-year-old man was killed in a crash on the Long Island Expressway Tuesday evening, police said.

According to Suffolk Police, the man was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Impala west on the LIE when it struck a 2007 Mini Cooper east of Exit 55 in Hauppauge around 6:10 p.m. The Chevrolet then veered off the road and into a wooded area where it struck several trees.

The driver of the Chevrolet, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver of the Mini Cooper, 20-year-old Darren Cheng, of College Point, Queens, was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with non-life threatening injuries.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8452.

The crash closed the westbound LIE in the area for several hours.
