1 Killed In Bronxville 2-Alarm Apartment Building Fire

BRONXVILLE, NY — An apartment building fire in Westchester County displaced residents, sent at least two to the hospital, and left one person dead.

The Eastchester Fire Department says that on Sunday night, around 9:58 p.m., 18 firefighters responded to the Rivermere Apartments, on Lake Avenue, in Bronxville, after receiving a report of a fire.

EFD members were informed that there were residents possibly trapped on the second, third and fifth floors of the building.

A second alarm was then transmitted, bringing additional support from the Yonkers Fire Department and the Mount Vernon Fire Department.

The fire was located in a second-floor apartment.

According to Bronxville police, when they arrived at the scene, they saw the building superintendent assisting a resident of the fire apartment down a ladder. Officers then helped with that rescue.

Firefighters also rescued a civilian from a third-floor apartment.

Both residents were taken to the hospital.

Residents on the fifth floor were able to self-evacuate.

However, the fire department said that one resident could not be saved and passed away. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the family, according to authorities.

Eastchester FD says that the fire is not considered suspicious and remains under investigation by the Yonkers Fire Department Cause and Origin Team.
