EASTCHESTER, NY — The Eastchester Union Free School District superintendent will be suggesting to the Board of Education Tuesday that it should appoint fired coach Fred DiCarlo to another coaching position.

Superintendent Ronald Valenti said he was going to propose that DiCarlo be appointed varsity basketball coach for the winter season when the board makes coaching appointments at the Tuesday meeting.

DiCarlo was fired Wednesday after being informed in late October that he was under investigation for incidents where he supposedly berated athletes and used profanity in front of them.

The coach is a 1985 Eastchester graduate and has been with the district for more than 30 years.

Valenti said he makes the recommendation pending DiCarlo’s acceptance of specific measures.

“We have met with Coach DiCarlo and he has acknowledged mistakes were made and apologizes for any derogatory or inappropriate language that may have been used towards any students,” Valenti wrote in a prepared statement for the board.

“For reasons of confidentiality, we will not comment further, other than to state that we are satisfied that Coach DiCarlo has met, and will continue to meet, the conditions we have laid down in order for him to return to his coaching position,” he said.

Valenti said, for the record, that he re-emphasizes the district’s position that appropriate conduct standards by all coaches outside the school day apply equally to conduct expected from students and staff within the academic day.

The Eastchester Board of Education will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in a work session in the Eastchester High School library. The meeting will be live-streamed through this link.
