Teens from Tuckahoe and Eastchester High have just been awarded scholarships from the Tuckahoe-Eastchester Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber presented the scholarships to Tuckahoe Senior Elisabeth Lefer and Eastchester High Senior Kurt Kellthaler.
"Our scholarship committee selected two great recipients for this year's scholarship," said Eastchester-Tuckahoe Chamber of Commerce Co-President Jacqueline Vazquez. "It's a hard task to select just two because there are so many of the applicants who are deserving of such an award."
Lefer is an honor student who will be heading to Fordham University this year. While at Tuckahoe, Lefer has tutored other students in math as well as in the art of playing the clarinet. She was a member of the Interact Club and has been a Girl Scout Gold Award recipient.
Kurt Hellthaler will be heading to the University of Tampa this fall. Hellthaler has been a member of the EGO and a Ski Club vice president. He recently became an emergency medical technician, and he is involved with the Yonkers Police Department and Eastchester Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
"The scholarship is awarded annually, and it's based on students' school work, contribution to the community, in addition to activities, excellent references and essay," said Vazquez. "I feel honored to be a part of a chamber that promotes local businesses, but also gives back to the community."
