BROOKLYN, NY — Two NYPD cops shot in Brooklyn Tuesday are expected to make full recoveries, while their suspected shooter remains in critical but stable condition, according to police.

The Brownsville shooting that injured 16-year and 9-plus-year NYPD veterans is under investigation by the department's Force Investigation Division and Brooklyn's district attorney, police said.

The violence started Wednesday about 3:05 p.m. when a woman living on Bergen Street between Saratoga Avenue and Thomas S. Boyland Street reported she was physically assaulted by her son, said Joseph Kenny, the NYPD's chief of detectives.

When police arrived, they quickly tried to arrest Melvin Butler, 39, who resisted, prompting a "violent struggle," Kenny said.

As the officers and Butler tumbled to the ground, an officer called out, "he has my gun" — Butler grabbed the cop's gun and multiple shots rang out, Kenny said.

The officers were shot in the left hand and left thigh respectively, before shooting at Butler multiple times, Kenny said.

Butler remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition, Kenny said.

"Our officers are lucky to be alive at this hour," said Police Commissioner Edward Caban.

Butler has multiple previous arrests related to domestic violence, and served 15 years in state custody related to an attempted murder charge, Kenny said.

"This was a horrific incident that because of their actions, a dangerous person is apprehended and we have two officers that will be going home to their families," Mayor Eric Adams said.
