.) Efforts to clean the Scajaquada Creek continue into what is now being coined “Scajaquada September.” Spearheaded by Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, parts of the Scajaquada have been successfully cleaned by creating pathways connecting the creek to natural spring water. These efforts, along with other methods and general awareness, will continue in the coming years. Jill Jedlicka, Executive Director of the Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, says the goal is that someday “no one has to worry anymore about what’s in our water.”
.) In a recently issued assessment, Erie County Medical Center ranks above Top 20 North American trauma hospitals in case complexity and outcomes. The diverse team of doctors at ECMC, consisting not only of physicians and nurses, but also occupational therapists, social workers, speech-language pathologists, and physical therapists, ensures that rehabilitation occurs at every possible level. Additionally, the report points out that 56.7% of ECMC’s cases are trauma patients, which is significantly higher than the next closest hospital at 39.3% trauma patients.

.) Yesterday marked the beginning of Buffalo Bookstore Week, which will last until September 4th. During this week, nine of Buffalo’s independent bookstores are offering a raffle for this week’s patrons to have a chance to win a season subscription to the Just Buffalo Literary Center’s BABEL reading series 2022-23 season, which starts with Elizabeth Kolbert next month. As owner of Rust Belt Books, Kristanne Meal, sees it, “a city’s truer inner culture can be revealed through the choices of its stacks in independent bookstores.”
For the full list of participating bookstores, check out Buffalo Rising.
.) Young people of Buffalo are given the chance to show their entrepreneur skills through the Success+Me program. Success + Me is a local platform dedicated to bettering the youth of the city. The local entrepreneur events will culminate on September 17th, when five young people pitch their business for the chance to win $1,000. One of the event organizers, Sam Hill, explains how important the program is because it offers “different success skills.” As the platform expands, they hope to start offering classes.

.) The young woman’s body found in North Buffalo this June has officially been ruled a homicide. Jalia Marrero’s body was found in June after she was declared missing in May. Officially ruled a homicide by the Erie County Medical Center Examiner’s Officer this weekend, WNY Crime Stoppers are now offering a $7,500 reward for information relating to her murder.
