University at Buffalo's Freshman Quarterback Poised to Make an Impact

Fans and analysts alike anticipate Jason Wright could become a cornerstone for Buffalo's football program in the coming years.

The University at Buffalo Bulls have welcomed a promising dual-threat talent to their football roster: freshman quarterback Jason Wright. Standing at 6’3” and weighing 195 pounds, Wright – known affectionately as "Jay” or “Jay-Dub" – committed to Buffalo last summer following a standout high school career in his home state of Virginia.

As he embarks on the next chapter of his career in Amherst, Wright’s dynamic playing style and leadership qualities are expected to energize the Bulls’ offense. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how his skills translate to the college level, anticipating that he could become a cornerstone for Buffalo’s football program in the coming years.

Before arriving in Buffalo, Wright’s high school career was met with constant change and adjustment. He played for four different schools. While that lack of consistency disrupted his ability to settle into one system, it also forced him to learn to adapt and gave him the “hunger” he needed to succeed.

After seeing limited playing time off the bench in his first two years of high school, Wright was locked in as a starter and more focused than ever during his junior and senior seasons.

During his junior season at Huguenot High School in Richmond, Virginia, he began to firmly establish himself as a standout prospect – showcasing his exceptional size, speed, smarts, and ability to beat opponents through the air and on the ground. In his first game with the Falcons, he threw for a school and Richmond-area record seven touchdowns and ran for two more. He finished the season throwing for 2,096 yards with 24 touchdowns while rushing for 502 yards with nine touchdowns.

Wright finished his high school career at Lloyd C. Bird High School in Chesterfield, Virginia as one of the more exciting quarterbacks to watch in recent state history. During his final season of prep football, he amassed 1,403 passing yards with eight touchdowns and added 398 rushing yards with nine touchdowns, earning All-Region and All-County honors. He also led the team to within one game of the state championship.

Wright finished his high school career with 3,931 passing yards and 34 touchdowns while adding 1,297 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns.

Recruitment and Commitment

Wright’s resilience, adaptability, and unwavering determination paid off. By the time the curtain closed on his high school career, he had received scholarship offers from 15 different Division I programs.

He committed to UB in December, saying his decision was influenced by the program’s upward trajectory and the opportunity to contribute to its growth.

Enrolling early in January 2025, he has immersed himself in the team’s dynamics and fully embraced the competition for the starting quarterback position.

Looking Ahead

As spring practices continue and the 2025-2026 season approaches, Wright’s commitment to self-improvement remains his driving force. His long-term goal to become the new starter for UB and make an impact is one he envisions in the near future. But first, he wants to reach a personal milestone.

“My first college touchdown, that's gonna be awesome.”
