- It's that time of year again, when the developing larval mosquitoes are in great numbers in the marshlands. The Suffolk County Department of Public Works' Division of Vector Control will use a helicopter to spray and control mosquito larvae June 14–16 from 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. - weather permitting. - Hike with Hugs, Inc. (Human Understanding and Growth Services) and East End Thrive will have a meet up on Friday, June 17, at 5 p.m. at the Wertheim Wildlife Refuge in Shirley. The event is free and open to all. Register here. (Event Brite)
- Some sections at the Smith Point County Park are closed for Piping Plover nesting, officials said on Tuesday. Sections are closed indefinitely to allow federally protected piping plovers to hatch their eggs, Suffolk County officials said. (Subscription: Newsday)
- A 17-year-old good Samaritan saw Mia Samolinski, 18, drive her Subaru Outback in a parking lot off South Ocean Avenue, adjacent to Patchogue Bay, "when she accidentally stepped on the gas instead of the brake and drove into the water at approximately 10:10 p.m.," authorities said. Anthony Zhongor dove into the water and opened the car door and pulled Samolinski out. Both teens were safe and uninjured, officials said. (News 12 Brooklyn)
- Manorville hosts Rainbow Scoops' grand opening on Friday, June 17, at 1 p.m. It is an ice cream lover's dream, especially "the main attraction: cotton candy burritos." It's incredible; three scoops of ice cream and three dry toppings, all wrapped in cotton candy! The new shop is located 460 County Road 111, inside the King Kullen shopping center near the Long Island Expressway. (Greater Long Island)
