  1. Suffolk County Community College hackers take top prize. Haley Olson and Joseph Hanrahan took top honors and a cash prize at the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) at Stony Brook University's Sixth Annual Hackathon recently. Olson and Hanrahan created a game for the coding competition that utilized computer languages they learned on the fly. (Press Release Desk)
  2. Come take a hike at Wertheim National Wildlife Center from: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The visitors center and gift shop are temporarily closed, but the park offers miles of beautiful trails that are available for hiking, birding, photography or to simply relax and enjoy the outdoors. The White Oak trail has short (1.25 mile) or long (2 miles) options with river and woodland views. The Black Tupelo trail is 3.3 miles that offers woodland and views from the east side of Carmans River. (WPIX 11 New York)
  3. "Nine Long Island bridges carrying a total of more than 67,000 vehicles daily are rated as being in 'poor' condition because of possible issues with decking, support beams, piers or abutments, according to state Department of Transportation data and experts," Newsday reports. A "poor" rating does not mean a bridge is unsafe or in danger of collapsing, but that it may need more frequent monitoring, maintenance and repair, postings for weight limits, or replacement in extreme cases of deterioration, according to the DOT.   4. Suffolk County police announced Wednesday that 14 people had been arrested in nine separate investigations that resulted in the seizure of 1,000 grams of cocaine, 650 grams of fentanyl and several illegal weapons.
