Michael Gaines, 44, a Southampton man, was convicted on one count of murder and two counts of burglary in the 2019 shooting death of Mtundu Vanderpool, who was asleep in his bed on the Shinnecock Reservation in 2019, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney. "With the jury's verdict, the family and loved ones of Mr. Vanterpool are able to get some small measure of justice for his brutal slaying and the defendant will now be held responsible for committing the heinous act of taking a life," Tierney said.   2. A convoy of fire trucks and other vehicles laden with firefighters’ tools and protective equipment, donated by more than two dozen Long Island fire districts, left Bethpage Thursday for rural Lee County, Kentucky, where it will be distributed to local departments, as reported in Newsday.   3. The Mental Health Subcommittee of the Community Mental Hygiene Advisory Board is holding a Zoom meeting Feb. 2.   4. A former duck farm in Aquebogue has been purchased by the Peconic Land Trust for $11.5 million. The 100-acre waterfront parcel on Flanders Bay known as Broad Cove had been targeted for development of a mixed-use resort, but the owners, Walo LLC, sold it instead to the land trust to keep it preserved.
