Girl, 13, Struck By Vehicle Near LI School: Police
She entered the road as a school bus was slowing down, and was hit by another vehicle, police say.
EASTPORT, NY — A 13-year-old girl was hit by a car near a Long Island school Monday, police said.
According to Southampton Town police, the incident took place at about 6:45 a.m. on Montauk Highway in the vicinity of the Eastport Elementary School. Patrol officers, along with the Eastport Fire Department and Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance responded. An investigation revealed that the girl had entered the roadway as an eastbound Montauk School Bus was slowing down with its yellow caution lights on, while a sedan was traveling westbound on Montauk Highway, police said.
The girl walked out in front of the westbound sedan from the side of the road, causing the collision, police said. The school bus had not yet activated its red stop light/arm, police added.

The girl was treated on scene for non-life-threatening injuries and transported to an area hospital; the driver of the sedan remained at the scene and is not suspected of any wrongdoing, police said.
