Local DAR Celebrates the Month of the Military Child
Polly Cooper, NSDAR members hosts a baby shower for expectant military families.

April is a significant month dedicated to recognizing the unique challenges faced by military children. Dubbed the Month of the Military Child, it serves as an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made not just by the service members themselves, but also by their families. One of the ways we can support these families is by participating in meaningful initiatives, such as collecting baby shower items for those expecting children while their partners are deployed.
This year, as part of our observance, we’re celebrating Purple Up Day—a day where individuals wear purple to symbolize support for military families. The color purple represents all branches of the military, blending the blue of the Air Force, the green of the Army, the red of the Marine Corps, and the navy of the Navy. By donning this color, we demonstrate our solidarity with those who serve our country, while also acknowledging the emotional and practical challenges their families endure.
As part of our Purple Up Day celebration, the Polly Cooper Chapter, NSDAR held a collection drive for Operation Baby Shower. This initiative specifically aims to gather essential baby shower items for expectant military families who are facing the unique challenge of welcoming a new life while they as a family or their loved one is deployed overseas. The items collected will be distributed through the Adolph Pfister American Legion’s Operation Baby Shower on April 26, 2025 where we will be delivering these much-needed supplies to military families awaiting the arrival of their little ones.

Participating in this collection drive is not just about gathering items; it is a heartfelt way for our community to stand together and honor our military families. Whether it’s diapers, clothing, toys, or baby care essentials, every contribution makes a difference. It's essential to recognize that while service members are stationed far from home, their families often bear the brunt of the emotional and logistical challenges that come with their service, especially during significant life events like welcoming a new baby.
The sacrifices made by military children are profound. Frequent relocations, adapting to new schools, and dealing with the absence of a parent can be incredibly taxing for a young mind. However, these children also learn resilience, adaptability, and the importance of community. By participating in events like Purple Up Day and supporting initiatives like Operation Baby Shower, we can contribute to a nurturing environment that celebrates their strength while alleviating some of the burdens their families face.

This April, join us in wearing purple and spread the word about Operation Baby Shower. Encourage friends, family, and colleagues to get involved—every little bit counts. Let us come together as a community to show our gratitude and support to the families of military children, reminding them that they are not alone in their journey.
As we recognize the Month of the Military Child, let’s commit not only to honoring their sacrifices today but to building a culture of support and appreciation for them every day. Together, we can make a positive impact on the lives of military families, ensuring they feel valued and connected to a community that cares.
