East Flatbush Junkyard Fire Sends Thick Smoke Over Brooklyn

The fire burned out of control for nearly 2 hours late Wednesday afternoon.

EAST FLATBUSH, BROOKLYN — A major fire in a junkyard on Preston Court near East 53rd Street sent plumes of thick, black smoke over a large swath of Brooklyn late Wednesday afternoon. The dark cloud was even visible from Manhattan.

The fire broke out around 5:11 p.m. at 1511 Preston Ct., according to the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY).

Two hours later, 65 firefighters at the scene were beating back the flames.

"It's going to be an ongoing operation," an FDNY spokesman told Patch by phone, sounding weary.

The fire was finally brought under control around 7 p.m., according to the FDNY. No injuries were reported as of that time.
