  1. An unidentified man wearing a gas mask opened fire on a train in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, on Tuesday, shooting ten people and injuring sixteen in total. At least five were in critical condition. He remained at large throughout the day, leading many schools throughout Brooklyn to go into lockdown. At a press conference MTA chief Janno Lieber described the day's events as similar to 9/11. 2. At a tense Community Board 14 meeting Wednesday, Flatbush residents debated a proposal to create a dedicated bus-only lane along portions of Flatbush Avenue. Supporters said that slow bus service disproportionately impacts Black and brown communities, while skeptics raised concerns over the lane's potential negative impact on car owners. (Brooklyn Reader)
  3. Murders are rising at an alarming rate in East Flatbush, where they reached a decade high last year. In the wake of high-profile shootings like the recent tragic death of Kade Lewin, it is difficult for many residents to recover from the pandemic. Others still feel safe in their community, and trust they will ultimately persevere in the face of adversity. (The New York Times)
