Here are the top three stories in Ditmas Park-Flatbush today:

  1. A lot goes into rescuing Brooklyn's feral and stray cat population. Often times well-intentioned cat rescuers in neighborhoods like Flatbush will rub residents the wrong way, after attempting to intrude onto their property to save cats without the owner's permission. “Flatbush is a predominantly Black and Caribbean neighborhood with a long history of white people ‘rescuing’ their cats without speaking to anyone,” according to the organization Flatbush Cats. (Brooklyn Reader)
  2. Brooklyn activists and politicians put New York City's controversial property tax lien sale "on trial" over the weekend, arguing that it disproportionately targets poor Black property owners. The lien is set to expire at the end of February, and Mayor Adams has expressed interest in ending it permanently, but it's unclear how. (Brooklyn Reader)
  3. Nikki Lucas won a special election for State Assembly in East New York, against Keron Alleyne. The win is significant for the Brooklyn Democratic Party, and especially significant for Party Chair Assembly Member Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn. (Brooklyn Paper)
