Here are the top four stories in Ditmas Park-Flatbush today:

  1. Brian Cunningham won the Brooklyn Democratic Party's nomination for the assembly seat previously held by Diana Richardson, after a tense seven-hours-long meeting. Some were upset that many county committee members cast their vote by "proxy," by letting others vote on their behalf, and Richardson herself was allegedly temporarily denied entry from the meeting. (New York City Patch)
  2. East Flatbush artist Kenny Altidor is memorializing the civil rights leader, activist, and Congressman, John Lewis, who passed away from cancer in 2020. Altidor's new mural at East 56th Street and Clarendon Road, which will honor his legacy in fighting for voting rights and against segregation, was unveiled on Monday, which would have been his birthday. (AMNY)
  3. A young vegan entrepreneur, Francesca Chaney is bringing veganism to Brooklyn's Black communities with her plant-based café Sol Sips. The café is located in Bushwick, but it delivers all the way to Flatbush, and offers deals to food stamp recipients. Chaney cites that the United States Black population is vegan at a higher rate (8%) than the country as a whole (3%). (Elite Daily)
  4. A woman is dead after the car she was driving in crashed into a trailer in East Flatbush. The car's driver is in custody, under the suspicion of drunk driving, although the investigation is ongoing. (WABC-TV)
