Here are the top four stories in Ditmas Park-Flatbush today:
- The man responsible for the death of New School professor Jeremy Safran in May 2018 will receive a prison sentence of 22 years to life in prison, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney's office. The man stabbed Safran, a psychology professor, in the basement of his Ditmas Park house, and then hid in his closet, authorities say. (Patch)
- At a Black History Month celebration towards the end of February, advocates for preserving African Burial Grounds made their case for why they believe it's crucial for these sites to be preserved as permanent memorials, rather than as housing or other uses. (Amsterdam News)
- A driver refused to stop when asked to by a police cruiser in Ditmas Park at Cortelyou and Rugby Roads early Thursday, subsequently crashing into the cruiser and leaving three people injured. A suspect is now in custody. (WABC-TV)
- Rent-regulated tenants and co-op shareholders of several buildings in Flatbush are battling their landlord, Maxx Properties, over large amounts of mold in their apartments, which specialists say cause long-lasting health conditions. Maxx Properties contends it isn't responsible for making repairs. The grassroots organization Flatbush For Equality says they are systematically discriminating against Black tenants.
