Here are the top four stories in Ditmas Park-Flatbush today:
- A three-alarm fire struck a building at East 9th Street and Cortelyou Road in Kensington on Thursday morning, injuring seven people, all of whom refused medical attention on the spot. This is the second major fire to occur on that street in a month. One neighbor described the blaze as looking like "something out of a movie." (Brooklyn Paper)
- Flatbush Councilwoman Rita Joseph organized a press conference on Wednesday, calling on the Department of Education to create an office dedicated to the unique needs of school children in foster care. She herself has been a foster parent in the past. (New York Post)
- Mayor Adams was ten minutes away from the funeral service for 12-year-old Kade Lewin on Wednesday, before realizing he had a prior conflict. Instead, he held a meeting with civil rights leaders about gun violence. (New York City Patch)
- The Brooklyn Democratic Party and a new party, the New Kings Democrats, are locked in a "war" of sorts, with candidates and elected officials from each party challenging their opponents' petition signatures, in an attempt to disqualify them from the ballot. Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, who represents Flatbush, has herself challenged several candidates in the neighboring 44th district. (Politics NY)
