'Badly Decomposed' Body Pulled From East River Near South Street Seaport

The body was found Wednesday afternoon.

LOWER MANHATTAN, NY — Authorities pulled a "badly decomposed" body from the East River on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The unidentified person was pulled from the river near South Street Seaport about 1:30 p.m., according to authorities. The person was pronounced dead at the scene, an NYPD spokeswoman told Patch. The body was decomposed that the person's gender, race and age could not immediately be determined, police said.

The cause of death is still being investigated, police said. The person was found floating in the water near Pier 15.
