Guilty Sentence for Drunk Driver Who Killed Man in East Village Crash

Shaun Martin was drunk and high on PCP and meth when he crashed his car into East Village Farm and Grocery in 2013, prosecutors said.

The man who crashed his car into East Village Farm and Grocery in 2013 and killed a man coming out of his overnight shift at the grocery was found guilty Wednesday, according to a statement from Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr.

According to prosecutors, Shaun Martin was high on PCP and meth when he crashed his car going more than 50 mph into the grocery store at 69 Second Avenue and ran into Mohammed Akkas Ali and injured two of Ali's coworkers. Martin was found guilty in a trial without a jury of murder in the second degree, aggravated vehicular homicide, assault and reckless endangerment, as well as several other charges. His sentencing is set for Sept. 21, and he could get up to life in prison.

Martin sobbed as he learned of his fate in court on Wednesday, the New York Daily News reported.

The accident happened at 7 a.m. on June 19, 2013. Ali was critically injured after being hit by Martin's Nissan Altima, according to the NYPD. He died a few months later at a nursing facility, his son testified. Martin's attorney tried to argue Ali's death was due to his breathing problems and lack of medical care, not due to the collision, the Daily News said.
