Lower East Side Car Robberies Called 'Crimes of Opportunity'

Police warn people in the LES not to leave valuables in their cars unless they want a "smash-and-grab."

Police are warning people in the Lower East Side that there has been a rash of car break-ins in the neighborhood in the past month.

The incidents happened on Essex, Delancey, Orchard, Ludlow, Allen and Norfolk streets. The crimes are mostly easily preventable crimes of opportunity, according to Tim Laughlin, president of the Lower East Side Partnership.

Police and the Lower East Side Partnership are telling people not to leave valuables in their cars (although not sure why anyone would leave a valuable in their car in this sweltering heat anyway, unless they wanted a melted laptop on their hands).

As Laughlin said, "If you wouldn't leave your MacBook Pro in your car at Fifth Avenue and Park, don't do it on Essex and Grand."

There have been at least seven incidents of car window smashing since the beginning of June, according to the NYPD.

But Laughlin made it clear that the wave of robberies doesn't reflect on the overall safety of the LES. Rather, it's just common sense not to leave your valuables visible in your car.
