MTA Tap-And-Go System Is Expanding To Financial District Stations

Two Financial District subway stations will get the tap-and-go "OMNY" fare system next month, the MTA announced.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT, NY — More tap-and-go fare systems are coming to the Financial District next month, the MTA announced.

The "One Metro New York" system, or OMNY, will come to Whitehall Street R and W station and the South Ferry 1 station next month, in addition to a slew of other stations and lines.

The OMNY expansion, in which straphangers tap their phone or credit cards onto a contactless system, comes as the MTA announces more than 3 million "taps" have been counted. One million taps were counted in six weeks — up from the first million taps made in the first ten weeks the program launched.

"Our customers have adopted OMNY at impressive levels during the public pilot and I expect that to continue now that we're beginning to roll out to the rest of the system," OMNY Program Executive Al Putre said in a statement Tuesday.

Other stations to get the new OMNY system next month include Penn Station, 86th St-Bay Ridge, Sutphin Blvd-Archer Av-JFK, and St. George and Tompkinsville stations along the Staten Island Railway. By the year's end, the 4, 5, 6 and 1 lines between 51st and 125th streets, Grand Concourse and Woodlawn, and Rector Street to Columbus Circle will be added.

All 472 stations and bus routes will have the system by the end of next year as the transit authority completely moves to the OMNY fare system by 2023, retiring the MetroCard.

"The public pilot has been immensely successful and what we've learned over these last several months will inform our work ahead as we scale OMNY across the entire transit system," Putre said.
