NYC Ferry Hits Underwater Pylon, Passengers Evacuated

FINANCIAL DISTRICT, NY — Police and firefighters evacuated passengers from a ferry that hit an underwater pylon near Downtown Manhattan on Monday evening, according to the NYPD and witnesses. The New York City Ferry boat got stuck on the sandbar about 90 feet from Pier 11 around 6:01 p.m., the NYPD said early Tuesday morning.

The NYPD's Harbor Unit and the FDNY's Marine Unit got all 121 passengers and crew members, as well as a dog, off the boat without any injuries, the NYPD said.

The ferry was going to the Rockaways from the Wall Street dock, a passenger named Luke said on Twitter. A photo he took shows passengers wearing bright orange life jackets.

The boat was backing into the harbor when it ran aground, FDNY Chief John Sarrocco told reporters at the scene. The boat was taking on water through two holes the collision made in its hull, the NYPD said. The Harbor Unit pumped out the water while passengers were evacuated, police said.

Kristine Stoller, one of the passengers, told reporters the ferry crew tried to get the boat moving again before calling the FDNY.

"They were trying a few times, trying to get the rudder to start working, and it just wasn't happening," she said in a video posted to Twitter.

The incident comes as five NYC Ferry boats are being repaired for potentially dangerous leaks, according to a New York Post report published Monday.

Police are still investigating the incident. No one has been arrested.
